Venus Eclipse (Occultation) on 16th May 2010 and Use Crescent Moon to Spot Venus

From 15th May -17th May People in India, north Africa, Middle east and South East Asia can spot Venus using Moon as a tool. Importantly experienced observers can witness lunar occultation of Planet Venus on 16th May, which is one of the only such unique event in 2010 involving a major planet.


On 15th May Venus above Moon: After sunset at 7pm one should look towards west direction to find Bright thin Crescent Moon. Just above it one can find Bright Non-twinkling object which is Planet Venus.

Occultation of Venus on 16th May:  On 16th May beginning 3.30pm. to 5.30 p.m. depending on location, people in India can notice called Lunar Occultation of Planet Venus in the skies. In which view of Planet Venus is obscured by Moon during its course of journey around earth. Experienced observers with telescopes/powerful binoculars who know to locate Venus in Daytime can notice the Venus disappearing and   reappearing in the skies by moon.

Time in Hyderabad: As seen from Hyderabad (like any other place in India) Moon will obstruct the view of planet Venus from our view from 4.08 p.m.( disappearance)  to 5.34 p.m (reappearance). Though occultation of stars, planets are common in any part of the year is noticeable only from few locations across world. Occultation of Major planet like Venus is only such event for year 2010 notable from India, north Africa, Middle east and South East Asia.

Reappearance of Venus below moon - Conjunction: Further after occultation on 16th May at 7 pm. Venus can be spotted easily as it will in conjunction to moon separated by 0.093 degree. i.e Due to conjunction one can find Venus very close just below to Moon shining brightly.

On 17th May Using Moon: On 17th also people can find planet Venus little far below Moon.

No need of Telescopes: people can directly observe Venus using Moon with their own eyes except occultation. Telescopes are required only appreciating finest features of the planet.
