Planetary Society begins Centre for Environmental Activism

Space and Astronomy are great vehicles of environmental activism. The picture of Earth taken from space as a Pale Blue Dot taken by Voyager 1 in 1990 inspired environmental activism in the 90s.

Also, in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy used the vehicle of astronomy to spread knowledge about pollution and protection of our heritage sites.

Environment and ISRO : Recently, India's Environment Ministry and ISRO agreed to build a dedicated environmental satellite. These are besides programmes like National Natural Resources Management System, Bhoosampada etc run using remote sensing satellites. The data generated from space technologies is supplementing the efforts of government to monitor and protect environment.

Given this picture, the Planetary Society, India believes that the setting up of a Center for Environmental Activism (CEA) will help us focus on environmental issues where space sciences would propel us with action. The Vision of PSI states "To Build a new community in harmony with nature under the guidance of Cosmic Discipline" Importantly aims and objectives of society mandate to realize propagate earth as unique planet with life.

We will from henceforth, do a once in a week post here on the Planetary Society blog to create awareness and convert these awareness into action steps that you can take in your neighborhood to improve the Environment.
