"Asteroid 2012 KT42" to passby Earth at Distance of 14000 Km at 12.37 pm 29 May 2012

Newly-discovered asteroid 2012 KT42 is flying past Earth today (May 29th) only ~14,000 km above the planet's surface. This means 2012 KT42 will actually fly inside the Clark Belt of geosynchronous satellites.

Time of pass by :
It is expected to pass by earth at 12.37 p.m. Indian Standard Time (7.07 UTC).

Size of the asteroid :
The 3- to 10-meter wide asteroid ranks # 6 on the top 20 list of closest-approachers to Earth.

Here is list of Asteroids

Is there any danger of Collision to earth ?

According to the asteroid's orbit, there is no danger of a collision.

Scientist say even if it did hit, this space rock is too small to cause significant damage. It would likely disintegrate almost entirely in the atmosphere, peppering the ground below with relatively small meteorites

Transit of Asteroid across Disk of Sun at  3.40 p.m. (10.10 UTC)
According to Andrew Lowe pointed out that on May 29 at about 10:10 UT,  2012 KT42 the minimum geocentric elongation from the center of the sun will be 0.1 degrees, so given the parallax there will be a transit across the sun, centered in southern Asia. If the diameter is about 5m, then the object could be only about 0.006" across against the solar disk.

Here sequence of images above by Alex Gibbs from the Catalina Sky Survey, who made the discovery of 2012 KT42 with the 1.5 meter telescope on Mt. Lemmon, Arizona.
Even yesterday another Asteroid named 2012 KP24 missed earth. (details will be put later)

Timings of the Eclipse on 21st May 2012:  As per Indian Standard time the eclipse begins at 2.26 a.m. and Eclipse Ends at 8.19 a.m. The maximum phase of eclipse will be at 05.23 a.m

Visible in North Eastern States – but only for few Minutes – due to Eclipse Path : Most of the North Eastern states where sun will rise around/after 4.41 a.m.  can witness this celestial wonder for few Minutes only close to horizon.  Because this eclipse is not visible beyond 4.52 a.m. from India which lies in broader Penumbral path of Moon’s Shadow (away from Central/Umbra path) producing Partial Solar Eclipse for observers

Other Eclipses 2012: PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE on 4th June & TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE on 14th November are not visible from India. Whereas there is a PENUMBRAL LUNAR ECLIPSE on 28th Nov, 2012 it can’t be appreciated visibly and as per Govt. of India’s Indian Astronomical Ephemeris 2012 page.333 “A penumbral eclipse of moon is not be taken as an eclipse of the moon in the ordinary sense, as the moon is not covered by the real shadow of the earth during such an eclipse”

Major Event in 2012 - Transit of Venus on 6th June 2012: major celestial event of year visible from India will occur on 6th June 2012. Which no one alive today can see again in their life time as next Transit will occur in 11th December 2117

No Opportunity to see a SOLAR ECLIPSE (till 2016 or 2019)  covering Major parts of  India : The next best opportunity to see a SOLAR ECLIPSE from Major parts of the India  including Andhra Pradesh is on 2019 Dec 26th.

Because the solar eclipse in 2016 though visible in major parts India (including Andhra Pradesh) begins and lasts only for few minutes close to horizon in early hours of March 9 2016. Wherein again only few states in the country where sun rises early can appreciate this solar eclipse of 2016.

We thank PTI friends for North-East states to witness solar eclipse tomorrow article published on 21st May 2012.

NASA New Count - 4700 Potentially Hazardous Asteroids - Size larger than 100 meters

In NASA latest release Observations from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) were presented which have led to the best assessment yet of our solar system's population of potentially hazardous asteroids. A total of 4700 Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (+ or - 1500) with Size larger than 100 meters have been estimated accurately.

What are Potentially Hazardous Asteroid ?
Also known as "PHAs," these asteroids have orbits that come within five million miles (about eight million kilometers) of Earth, and they are big enough to survive passing through Earth's atmosphere and cause damage on a regional, or greater, scale.

What is the present number of Potentially Hazardous Asteroids as per new count? How many have been found ?
here are roughly 4,700 PHAs, plus or minus 1,500, with diameters larger than 330 feet (about 100 meters). So far, an estimated 20 to 30 percent of these objects have been found.

Did NASA WISE Mission count all the PHA present ?
No, Using the Sample of 107 PHAS from  WISE Missions asteroid-hunting portion (called NEOWISE) made this scientific prediction about the population as a whole.

Why Asteroids are so Important to Note ?

Why are talking about this now ?
In latest NASA Release dated 17th May 2012 Mailed to us at 7.a.m. (16th May US timings).

Scientists Observations from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) have led to the best assessment yet of our solar system's population of potentially hazardous asteroids.

Can you give us the picture of PHA as would be seen from Space ?
Yes here is the simulated view of the near-Earth asteroid population presented with various colours. In the picture Earth Orbit is Green.

PHA (scatter, 558px)
Orange Colour are PHA'S : potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) are denoted in orange.
Less dangerous near-Earth asteroids are blue.
Does this Mean till this release was made Scientists didnt know how many PHA's are there ?
No scientist had some estimates previously of PHAs with was in similar in numbers as it announced now. But previous estimates were rough approximations.

Whereas NEOWISE has generated a more credible estimate of the objects' total numbers and sizes.

How important is WISE Space Telescope Data ?
WISE space telescope has counted both light and dark objects (not easy to detect with normal techniques) using  infrared light, or heat, of asteroids.

According to said Lindley Johnson, program executive for the Near-Earth Object Observation Program at NASA Headquarters."The NEOWISE analysis shows us we've made a good start at finding those objects that truly represent an impact hazard to Earth," .

"But we've many more to find, and it will take a concerted effort during the next couple of decades to find all of them that could do serious damage or be a mission destination in the future."

PHA (orbits, 200px)
This orbit diagram illustrates the difference between a PHA and less hazardous near-Earth asteroids (NEA).
What was newly found in the latest analysis of Scientists using WISE Mission ?
The new analysis suggests that about twice as many PHAs as previously thought reside in low-inclination orbits, which are roughly aligned with the plane of Earth's orbit.

"Our team was surprised to find the overabundance of low-inclination PHAs," said Amy Mainzer, NEOWISE principal investigator, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"Because they will tend to make more close approaches to Earth, these targets can provide the best opportunities for the next generation of human and robotic exploration."

What does th NEOWISE Suggest ? Collsion between Asteroids Suspected ?
The NEOWISE analysis suggests a possible origin for the low-inclinaton PHAs: Many of them could have originated from a collision between two asteroids in the main belt lying between Mars and Jupiter.

A larger body with a low-inclination orbit may have broken up in the main belt, causing some of the fragments to drift into orbits closer to Earth and eventually become PHAs.

The lower-inclination PHAs appear to be somewhat brighter and smaller than other near-Earth asteroids.

The discovery that PHAs tend to be bright says something about their composition; they are more likely to be either stony, like granite, or metallic. This type of information is important in assessing the space rocks' potential hazards to Earth. The composition of the bodies would affect how quickly they might burn up in our atmosphere if an encounter were to take place.

"The NEOWISE project, which wasn't originally planned as part of WISE, has turned out to be a huge bonus," said Mainzer.  "Everything we can learn about these objects helps us understand their origins and fate."

Perigee "Super Moon" on 6 May 2012 - India

On 6th May 2012 at 9.03 a.m. Moon will reach the closest point (Perigee) in it orbit. Further at 9.05 a.m (3.35 a.m. UTC ) moon would reach its monthly full Total phase when its disk is fully illuminated. All in all Moon in fullest phase coinciding with it reaching Perigee point makes up for  event nicknamed as  "Super Moon" or scientifically speaking this phenomenon is known as "perigee moon."
‘‘Supermoon’ is a situation when the moon is slightly closer to Earth in its orbit than on average, and this effect is most noticeable when it occurs at the same time as a full moon. So, the moon may seem bigger although the difference in its distance from Earth is only a few percent at such times” Dr. Jim Garvin, chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Direction & Time to see - 5th & 6th May :On 5th or 6th May best time to watch Moon is when is close to horizon.
On 5th May for People India & around Moon is still on its way to reach Perigee point and be totally illuminated. However People in USA can see this May 5, at 11:35 p.m. EDT due to Timezone followed. Anyhow People can still take a chance to witness Not Yet Super Moon on 5th May.
On 6th May  Full Moon (9.05 a.m.) & Moon reaching Perigee point (9.03 a.m.) on 6th May.As at 9 am Sun very much in sky people should wait upto  7.02 p.m.  when Moon Rises on 6th May to witness looking toward East Direction.

Percentage of Change: This May’s full Moon is a "super Moon,” as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full Moons of 2012.

Why is it bigger/brighter, importance?  Journey of Moon around earth in oval shape orbit is responsible for full moons to appear in varied size. Importantly Full moon occurs every month, but occurrence of Full Moon when moon is at its closest (perigee) point is rare.
Further full Moons that occur on the perigee side of the Moon's orbit seem extra big and bright.

Is Super Moon a rare event ?
Super perigee Moons are actually fairly common.  The Moon becomes full within a few hours of its closest approach to Earth about once a year on average.

When is last time it occurred? Distance?   The last such coincidence occurred on March 19th, 2011, producing a full Moon that was almost 400 km closer than this one i.e.  356,577 kilometers (on 19 March 2011). Whereas on 6th May 2012 (it will be at 3,56,953 km) .

They so much Media Attention ?
 1. 19 March 2011 Super Moon followed by Earthquake can be said as first reason.
2. Enthusiasts who observed the data of Perigee Moon for 18 years noticed that Event of 19 March 2011 Moon was very close compared to many of previous years.
3. This year Moon is just 400 km far from what it was in 2011 March event.

Does Moon effect human body ? Will Super Moon Effect us ?
According to NASA Release dated 2nd May 2012 "The majority of modern studies, however, show no correlation between the phase of the Moon and the incidence of crime, sickness, or human behavior" .
Here is another link Click here

It is true Super Moon brings increased tides ?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there is nothing to worry about. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters only a few centimeters (an inch or so) higher than usual. Local geography can amplify the effect to about 15 centimeters (six inches)--not exactly a great flood.

Will it cause any Natural Catastrophe or Earthquakes?  Will another 11 April 2011 Fukushima earthquake event occur ?
Scientifically speaking  no evidence as so far been found linking events far in space to what happens on earth particularly regarding natural disasters. The factors responsible for Earthquakes etc...are different.
